Kids Life Skills
Kids Life Skills are an important part of serving the youth of Homestretch. Every Wednesday night all of the children come to Homestretch and are divided into groups by age to learn about important things that impact them in their daily lives.
- Kids Club serves students grades 1-5. Kids Club leaders use a hands-on, activity –based approach in order to make learning fun for the elementary school students. The children learn about health and nutrition, tobacco prevention, the importance of high self-esteem and how to build it, literacy activities, money management, working together as a team and so much more.
- Middle School Club serves students in grades 6-8. This program is designed to help 6th -8th graders navigate the difficult times that many children face in Middle School. They learn about building friendships and their own self-image, about cliques, gender roles and dating. The children also learn about health issues including tobacco prevention, alcohol abuse, and HIV /AIDS awareness and about goal setting, organizational skills and money management.
- Teen Club serves Homestretch teenagers. Homeless teenagers need concentrated attention since prolonged housing crisis often hinders the development of teens’ interpersonal skills. Homestretch teens often lack strong adult direction due to weak parenting and family financial stress. Many families have patterns of physical and sexual abuse. The Teen Club’s goal is to help teens develop healthy practices, learn useful skills, broaden their horizons and experience opportunities that will equip them to work toward a productive future. They participate in team building activities, recreational outings and weekly meetings that cover topics such as violence prevention, conflict resolution, family and peer relations and teen pregnancy. The Teen Club promotes personal responsibility and active involvement by the teens.
